BrokeButNotForLong, Inc.,  is a charitable, nonprofit organization that I founded in April of 2009.  The idea for our organization came about in January of 2009 when the rate of suicide among veterans  was higher than the rate of servicemen killed at war.  I was extremely saddened by this news and decided to assist veterans in their transition back into the community, as a worker or a student.  I thought about what skills I could use to assist veterans.

As an educational specialist, I have experience looking at transitional goals and activities of students going into the workforce throughout the state of Florida.  After researching the job market and analyzing the data, I decided I could share various educational and job-related resources and initiatives with the veterans online.  In 2009, there weren’t many job search engines that provided assistance to veterans much less the disabled.

In February of 2009, a web quest on Google brought up these nine search engines: Career Builder, Monster, Yahoo!HotJobs, Simply Hired, SnagAJob, Indeed, Job Search, and Job Search USA.  At that time, Monster had a security breach to its database (1-23-09).  They only had a “diversity” search option to look for work.  Career Builder didn’t have any options for veterans either.  Only Simply Hired had a menu option for veteran friendly companies.

Since unemployment rose, these companies have expanded their offerings.  I was surprised to see on the Department of Labor’s Career Tool Challenge how many different options/categories are now available on the bigger Internet job search engines like Monster.  Basically, the job hunt is getting more inclusive of veterans, persons with disabilities, and diversity which is a good thing.  I just wanted to let you know part of the reason we came into existence–to help fill the void.
